The
new General Store seems to have taken off with a bang. Whenever I’m there I see
people dropping by and getting lunch, coffee, a sweet roll…oh yes, and ice cream.
Going
by what I’ve seen over the last week, the soft ice cream machine at the new
General Store is more than earning its keep. There’s a reason for that, and here it is.
Turns
out that Ulster County NY is the only, yes, ONLY county in our state that
allows ice cream vendors to sell real ice cream. Every other county limits the
butterfat to 5%. In fair minded, let-the-calories-look-after-themselves,
Ulster, we have our own rules, and frankly I’m delighted. We are ALLOWED to eat
a mixture that has 10%. Lucky us.
You
can drop by the store and grab a real ice cream, and know that the powers that
be are not running your life for you. It’s a major strike for freedom in our
fair state and the other counties should wake up and smell the vanilla.
That
said, I am limiting my intake a bit. I’m determined not to eat no more than 14
ice cream cones a week. How did I come up with that number? Good question.
After
an hour with my calculator and a calorie chart I have ascertained that if I do 37 sit ups a day, I can equalize the “ice cream” effect that 14 ice creams has
on my delicate metabolism. It’s a great trade off, and one that I’m more than
happy to make.
Enough said. I’m off to the store for the first installment for today.
