Can this be the stuff of global warming??

I wonder is anyone is monitoring the effects on the local ecosystem of these odd weather patterns we have been experiencing for the past few years. Many old timers will say they have never seen anything like it and I tend to believe them. I recall many more species and birds around the Catskills than I have seen or heard in a recent years.

Which brings up the recent NYS report that dangerous levels of mercury have been found in songbirds of the Catskills. This mercury contamination is due largely to the coal-burning power plants in the Midwest dropping mercury-contaminated acid rain on the Catskills. The local fish have had high levels of mercury detected in them for years now. This has led the NYS DEC to declare that ALL freshwater fish in the state have a food health warning associated with them. High levels of mercury in the NYC reseriors has also been recorded and monitored for years now.

Sadly, this reminds me of the photos from the 1970's of mercury-poisoned children in Minimata, Japan by W. Eugene Smith. They had been exposed to high levels of industrial mercury in their drinking water when babies or as fetus'. Here's a link: http://www.geocities.com/minoltaphotographyw/williameugenesmith.html
Let's hope and pray it never even comes close to this.

But mercury is an element which is difficult, if not impossible, to remove once it has contaminated the environment. It is important for people, especially young parents, to be aware of this unfolding situation. Raise your voice, take action and be heard.
